The University of Rio Grande offers a variety of excellent facilities for art majors, including studios for painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, photography and graphic design. Seniors get individual or shared studio space for long term and more involved projects.
Kari Drawing
Painting and drawing are taught in the Art Annex, where students can work in large or small scale. The woodshop is next door for easy access to equipment for building stretchers and frames. Natural light abounds.
Our combined ceramics and sculpture area has space for hand-building, wheel-throwing and casting of clay, paper and plaster. The metal shop includes tools for cutting, welding, and shaping metals. Equipment for bronze and aluminum casting are in the outdoor kiln and foundry pad.
We have a variety of kilns for student use, including electric, gas fired, wood, and raku. Students learn to load, fire and conrol the kilns for bisquing and glazing. Pottery wheels, extruders, clay mixers and slab rollers are also available for student use.
The printmaking area includes two etching presses and one litho press, and has a vented acid cabinet, aquatint box, a selection of litho stones and screenprinting exposure unit.
The design studio is located in the Berry Center for Fine and Performing Arts. It has 15 powermac G5 workstations, scanners, digital SLR cameras, a large format 24" Epson inkjet printer, a color laser printer, and the full Adobe Creative Suite 2, including Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive, InDesign, DreamWeaver, and Flash.
Our darkrooms have ample enlargers and developing facilities for black and white, and negative developing. Additionally, we have a large exposure unit for contact printing of gum prints, cyanotypes and photomechanical print processes.
